ADRA FARRISS, LUT, Unity Church in the Gardens, Florida, Lunches with Michelle Obama!
Here is her first-person account:
Imagine a ball room ready for a luncheon of over a thousand. The tables are dressed in lovely green and brown linens and in each chair is a goodie bag made of the same fabric and filled with special gifts. Also imagine the Marine Band playing as distinguished invited guest were escorted down the runway by a Marine in dress uniform. These were wives of some of the Supreme Court Justices, cabinet members and others. The crowd stood up and cheered when Mr. Paul Pelosi was escorted by a female Marine. |
 | How did I get there? A Unity friend had called and asked if I wanted to go. Imagine how quickly I said, "yes" and then danced around my home. This luncheon is given annually by the Congressional Club, which is composed of spouses and children of members of Congress.
Who we had all been waiting for, Michelle Obama, came down the runway alone. The crowd stood and applauded and cheered. Of course, I must tell you that she had on a lovely printed and fitted dress with cap sleeves. She is tall and gives the appearance of strength - inner strength. She began her talk with, "I thought I would let you know how the family has settled in." She went on to say that her mother had so many invitations that often she and the President had to hire a sitter. We were told that the girls are doing well in school and added, "I am a soccer mom like many of you and am on the soccer field every Saturday."
Michelle Obama then spoke of how important it is for all of us to serve in our communities. She and her daughters had worked the day before with Congressional Club members to pack food bags for the homeless. She definitely walks her talk. She continually impresses me with her intelligence and grace, with so many eyes looking and talking about what she does, says and wears.
Her final remarks went back to her family. "If your children want a dog, you will have to love it. I love my Bo; I was up this morning at 5:15 walking Bo." There were tears in eyes, applause and cheers when she sat down to enjoy the delicious lunch that we all had.
There are some things that are unforgettable; going to the First Lady's Luncheon is certainly high on the list for me. It was a total gift to me, for which I am grateful. Thank you God! Just imagine.
